Apollo 2 – 2009

Game robot was designed for: Lunacy

Brief Game Description: Lunacy is a game played on a field known as the crater (illustrated in the figure below). Two alliances, one red and one blue, composed of three FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) teams each, compete in each match. The object of the game is to attain a higher score than your opponent by placing the game pieces in the trailers hitched to the opposing alliance’s robots. Frame: This year the frame was made mainly of aluminum as well as other components from the kit of parts received from FIRST.

Drive System: Six 6″ Andymark wheels that have no traction. It runs with one CIM motor on each side.

Manipulator: The manipulator in this year was a spiral with a spinning inner core. The inner core, made of a PVC pipe and broom bristles, is responsible for moving the balls along the track of the spiral. This particular manipulator only runs on one CIM motor. The shooting mechanism contains a CIM motor attached to a wheel.

New Concepts: This year we had the opportunity to obtain a new controller that was programmed through LabVIEW.

Components Discarded: None.

After many design choices and changes throughout build season, 1089 decided that, the 2009 robot, Apollo II, would be successful at competitions by shooting balls into the opposing trailers through the use of an Archimedes screw. The robot finished as Quarter-Finalists at the Philadelphia Regional and took their excitement to the Championship Event in Atlanta, Georgia, and various off season events!
